Oskar’s Take on Opening Night

- Carla Lever

I’m just back from a buzzing Little Theatre, where the Out the Box Festival was officially declared open by festival director Yvette Hardie and Handspring co-founder Basil Jones at a wonderful ceremony of bite-sized show extracts, put together with some clever direction from Lara Bye.

In the spirit of ubuntu (and Distell), I had to share with you some wise words from my date for the evening: Oskar from Kardiavale. (in case you’re more familiar with Oscar’s usual incarnation in the clever disguise of one Rob Murray from Conspiracy of Clowns, please do remind yourself of the delights of Kardiavale over here)

C.L:      It was really nice of you to help Lara with tonight’s ceremony, Oskar. I know you’re usually pretty busy running your own freak show.

O:  Well, sometimes you have to take an evening off to help a friend. Oskar’s all about being….friends. Besides, some of the people here look quite good.

C.L:    I hope you’re referring to me. So, have you seen any performers who you might like to hire for your own carnival side show?

O: Yes! There’s a crazy Cossack running around here with a meat cleaver. I like the cut of his jib. Apparently he’s in a piece called Madame Touxflouwe…I’ll have to have a word with him later.

C.L:    There were some beautiful performances tonight, I’m sure any one of them would be a great addition to your show. So, have UNIMA put on a visual feast for us this year or what?

O: Yes, I mean look at the platters of food! The wine! The….[incoherent].

I would have liked to talk more to Oskar, but it was at this point that I lost my date to Distell. Wouldn’t be the first time. If you want your very own date with Oskar, why not find him at the Arena Theatre on Monday 5th at 6pm and again at 9:30pm and Tuesday 6th at 11am. For the rest, well, there’s a whole festival full of wonderful things to explore. Go and find your own favourite…but be sure to choose your date wisely.
