LA PLAZA: SIMPLE MARIONETTE MAGIC

A tiny house with little lamplights houses the detailed traditional marionettes of childhood. Out The Box has had so many unexpected surprises, with so many new things, new experiments, that I have managed to forget the very first puppet creations.

The grown-ups out-numbered the children  by a few, but that strange transition from outer grown-up to inner child happened smoothly for most as the first puppet trotted happily onto the stage. A tiny scraggly dog, operated with a large number of strings (I won’t try to hazard a guess) charged onto the park to squeals of delight from both children and adults. The detail that goes into these miniature marionettes is exquisite.

Don’t expect anything to profound or any complicated narratives. The beauty of it relies on the quaint simplicity. It consists of a few little stories of simple interacts between characters who come to play on the village square or park. Not all of the stories are equally engaging, and the serenading 80’-s rock- witch scene seemed to be the general favourite.

Children will love it for its novelty (why on earth does the flower water pistol thing always entertain??) and adults will engage mostly on a nostalgic level.

A little boy leaving the theatre tugged on his mom’s sleeve to ask:

“When can we see that movie again?” So I guess he liked it!
