Handspring Awards prizes total R35,000 at Out the Box
- by Yazeed Kamaldien
The Handspring Awards are back this year and a total R35,000 prize money will be handed to artists on the closing night of Out the Box festival.
The awards were launched last year at the Out the Box festival and there are five categories carrying a R7,000 prize for each winner. Handspring Puppet Company founders Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler launched the awards last year.
The first three years of the awards will identify artists at Out the Box only. After that the competition will be open to any persons producing puppet theatre in the Western Cape. It will run for five years.
Jones has been rushing between shows as he’s one of the awards judges.
“With 55 shows, by the numbers, the competition is going to be tougher this year. I’m a judge on the festival and there are so many surprises here,” he said.
He said they’re looking to “celebrate the people who are expressing themselves most emotionally and intellectually through objects”.
“We want to inspire people to do new work and continue working in the field,” said Jones.
Awards categories that are open to artists based in Africa only are Best Puppet Design, Best Puppet Manipulation, Best Puppet Debut and Best Visual Theatre Production. The Best Production award is for all shows irrespective of which countries the artists are from.
The Handspring Awards happens on September 11 at the Little Theatre on Orange Street.
