The wondering whale watchers are characters on a quest to become like whales with hilarious consequences. They swirl the audience into a high-energy comedy adventure juggling to catch food, bubbling under-water music, receiving e-whales from a giant puppet called Wanda. They discover that the ocean is under threat and get everybody involved in taking care of the sea and saving our whales. Don’t miss this amazing whale tale for families with children age 6 and over.

The production is funded by the L & S Chiappini Charitable Trust.

A clever, energetic and well-paced frolic with two talented whale watchers. Engages children and adults with a worthy message.

The Whale Show is one of many environmentally themed plays written and produced by Cape Town’s Jungle Theatre Company, which uses original children’s and family theatre as a vehicle for environmental social and cultural education. After a three year hiatus, The Whale Show returned to the stage this year with a successful run at Kalk Bay Theatre.

One of their best known performances, The Whale Show marks Jungle Theatre Company’s fifth appearance at Out The Box festival. The play is based on Heathcote Williams’s poem Whale Nation and was developed by Stuart Palmer, Vincent Meyburgh, Mbuso Shandu (translation) and Lika Berning (translation).

About the company:
Jungle Theatre Company’s (JTC) vision is society that is environmentally, socially and culturally conscious and active. They use theatre and physical drama workshops as a medium for conveying key environmental and social issues to a diverse family audience.

JTC works closely with other organisations to promote community participation in cultural and environmental events and programmes. They develop and facilitate workshops to provide learners, educators, volunteers and groups the skills needed to create their own theatre that deals with issues relevant to their own lives. They also train actors from community theatre backgrounds in the style of JTC as part of a skills development and job creation programme.

The majority of JTC’s work is with school age learners in historically disadvantaged communities. They strive to develop a diverse multicultural audience and, therefore, engage privileged schools through twinnings programmes to unite underprivileged and privileged learners.

Vincent Meyburgh – Artistic Director of Jungle Theatre Company has written, performed in and directed numerous educational children’s theatre productions including four Out The Box festivals. Jungle Theatre Company won the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s ‘Most Innovative Community Arts and Culture Project’ Award in 2008.

Stuart Palmer – former Company Director of Jungle Theatre Company now Director of Lunchbox Theatre Company has written, performed in and directed numerous children’s theatre productions.
