Watch Out!!!! There’s a twelve storey granny on the loose and she is heading to a theatre near you.
“Marvellous Mixtures” inspired by Roald Dahl’s hugely popular children’s book “George’s Marvellous Medicine” is now narrated by two local (and long suffering) farm chickens on a desolate Karoo farm.
This madcap piece of family entertainment combines award-winning playwright and director Neil Coppen’s love for physical theatre, puppetry and magic.
Marvellous Mixtures was first performed eight years ago and played to capacity houses at festivals and theatres around the country. The revised version starts two much-loved performers, Bryan Hiles and Daisy Spencer.
Marvellous Mixtures follows the misadventures of mischievous Matthew Pampoenpip who sets out to solve his foul-tempered Granny (Ouma’ Lemoenlippe) “slug munching” “cockroach crunching” ways, by brewing her a magical medicine that will cure her for good.
Of course things don’t go quite as young Matthew had planned when Ouma begins to sky rocket through the farm house roof.
Follow Matthew on this magical and offbeat comic adventure as he tries to stop his gargantuan granny (Godzilla with false teeth) from embarking on a catastrophic rampage.
A must see for children and adults of all ages.
Directed, adapted and designed by Neil Coppen, Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winner 2011, and starring Bryan Hiles and Daisy Spencer.
Deliciously wicked, witty and intelligent original theatre for young audiences. Coppen’s creative direction and staging, through the use of shadow puppets, a larger than life rod-puppet, inventive props and lighting, add magic to the mayhem. There are some truly surprising moments which elicited spontaneous claps and yelps of delight from the audience. But I would spoil those if I reveal them here. Watch out for one of the most delicious scenes in a children’s show that I have seen for a while: the chicken hip hop!

Coppen is a genius. The inspired puppets give the play a unique creative dimension while the two performers Hiles and Spencer are on top form. This is simply marvellous children’s entertainment.

TweetCoppen has written a punishing script and the two actors are on the go all the time rushing about changing rapidly from one character to another. They do full justice to the characters and appeared to be enjoying the romp as much as the audience, adults and children alike. With a running time of about 55 minutes, it keeps the audience enthralled.
