This is the story of a door. In front of the door stands the Doorkeeper. He guards the passage and holds the key. A voyage, a journey through one world into an unknown imaginative world, a rite of passage, a transformation. Mythical landscapes and enchanting universes unfold as the scripts of our lives are written, told and lived. Worlds are unlocked and living tableaux emerge to invite the senses to be led through yet another door into yet another world. This is a site where flying scriptures are waiting to be written or erased. It is about the undoing of the ‘script’ in which we believe our lives are written, told and lived… about the undoing of our visages, looking for hidden natures and unknown faces yet to be discovered.
Multi award winnings between the collaborators, Ubom! and Jori Snell of Baba Yaga Theatre, ensures an enthralling theatrical experience, so step through the ‘Door’ into a mesmerising labyrinth of visual feasts.
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
“When I was invited to direct a piece for Ubom!, I was very excited. I chose the title ‘DOOR’ for its strong potential imagery. A passage through a door holds a transformation from one state to another, from one world to another. I asked the performers to bring stories and dreams from their personal lives, encouraging them to work from a source within. At an early stage, I introduced the projector, as a source for creating different layered landscapes, put in relation to the performer’s material. Searching for that which surprises and puts an importance to every single element, the presence it needs and the readiness to shift, have been crucial key-points during rehearsals. It is a love for the unexpected, the weird and unconventional, which creates a ‘red thread’ in this work. I believe it has been a true journey for the performers (including myself) through many doors. It has been a gift to witness the performers grow a sense of trust in the very strength of a personal connection, held in the framing of this performance.”
REVIEWS
“Appealing further to the imagination were the quirky sound-effects, rich singing, humorous moments, elements of physical theatre, dances and graffiti.”
(Gabi Falanga, Grocott’s Mail, 22 March 2011)
“Door proved not only to be a refreshing piece of physical theatre but a series of stories that captivated the audience throughout. The style became a life of its own as the light, physical performances, textures and images brought the Box Theatre alive.”
(Michelle Howarth, Activate, 31 March 2011)
