Arts for a Sustainable Earth Hub
Sat 3 September 15:30
The PopArt Showcase will be a double bill including the piece, PopArt, and “Funny Oceans”, a 30 minute piece by Natural Fire, based in Masiphumelele, which explores our relationship with the sea and its creatures through a vibrant, puppet-based performance.
PopArt is a collaboration between Greenpop, a Cape Town-based tree-planting initiative that brings South Africans from all walks of life together to celebrate greening, Libellule Theatre (UK), and UNIMA SA.
PopArt will be an autobiographical physical theatre performance focussed on our environment from the perspective of 15 young South Africans. The creative piece will be devised, written and performed by Grade 7 learners from Prince Georges Primary in Lavendar Hill.
The creative process will start a week before the performance with a Greenpop tree planting day at Prince Georges Primary. The 15 Grade 7 performers will dig holes, plant trees, name their trees and get their hands dirty. This opening day will also see Simone Lewis and Louise Clarke from Libellule Theatre meeting their performers and introducing the concept that will roll out for a full week before the group perform PopArt at the Magnet Theatre in Observatory to an audience of 140 people.
The workshopping week will see a creative mix of visual art and physical theatre techniques – the Grade 7s will be taking photographs, writing poems, acting, moving, interacting with their environment for inspiration and devising a theatre piece that is completely their own.
Libellule Theatre are experts in education and theatre and Makhulu Productions will be assisting the learners on the visual, film and photographic side.
Look forward to something completely different, take a look at our environment from the perspective of young South Africans, learn about environmental issues that affect these students, see their creativity in action, support environmental education…
